– Reason one

Tooth decay is the leading reason for a toothache. Small caries that only affect the outer covering of the tooth (enamel) are usually painless. But when decay pierces the enamel and reaches the inner layer of the tooth called the dentin, the tooth will be very sensitive and vulnerable. As caries progresses and reaches the deeper, innermost layers of the tooth called the pulp, severe pain begins.

Infection of a decayed tooth causes the death of the dental pulp and the formation of an abscess (pus accumulation) under the tooth root. Advanced gum disease also causes tooth abscesses.
